Colonization has lead to many First Nations, Métis and Inuit people losing their culture. This does not make them less of an Indigneous person than others. From my experience of trying to reconnect with my culture, I often feel like a fraud because my family was forced to hide their culture. My kokum was a Residential School survivor and my moshom had to lie about being Cree when enlisting into WWII, which resulted in my family being stripped from their cultural identity. How do individuals in this position authentically seek out their culture, even if they do not know their roots?
