The high rates of Sucidide in indigenous communities aren't anything new to be shocked at. What we should be shocked about is the fact these events have been going on for years, and yet still aren't seen as a high priority by the government and media. Recently, there was a recent case of the "suicide of a beloved friend in (a) hockey community"(Somos, para 1). This case took place in Nunavut, and friends of this decreased had finally taken enough and decided to speak out. Ashoona of the beloved friends "stated the whole world needs to know how we are treated because it’s not right… it's unfair how we are being forced to live". ( Somos Para 4). This statement reminded me of an event in Tommy's Orange's novel There there.

One of the protagonists, Jacquie red feather attends a suicide prevention centre. At this event, one of the speakers makes the statement these suicide prevention campaigns are convincing the youth that "burning alive is better than leaving when the shit gets too hot for them to take"(p104).
