We are hearing more and more about murdered and missing Indigenous Women in Canada. But what is being done about it? A national public inquiry in 2019 called it a “genocide” which should have sounded some alarms yet we are constantly hearing about more and more women’s lives being taken ever so carelessly. The National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls found that “about 1,200 First Nations women in Canada had been murdered or gone missing between 1980 and 2012. Advocates believe the number is higher.” This is a staggering number and we keep seeing marches and protests for the government to help these poor women and their families, yet no true action is being done. It was reported in 2014 (by Canada’s federal statistics agency) that indigenous women were six times more likely to be a victim of a homicide than non-indigenous women. That number is unbelievable! Yet it’s true and a reality.

This conversation started (again) in my head when I head about another man being charged for killing one and connection with three more deaths of indigenous women. This kind of appalling news story keeps coming up and something needs to be done. Even if it starts (or continues) with a forum post.
