In the book There There by Tommy Orange powwows played a significant part to the story line. Throughout the book readers learn that powwows are portrayed as a place of gathering. It is a place where family and friends from all over travel to great distances and regardless of ‘status’ everyone is welcomed. In class we discussed how Orange believes that Powwows can be held outside but also can inside a building. He believes that being Indigenous can take place anywhere in contrast other authors such as Louise Erdrich believes that it needs to be connected to the land. She believed that it was being connected to the land is essential and to hold a powwow inside would not be authentic. This article shows how mixing the modern and traditional world of Indigenous people is moving forward. I believe that Tommy Orange would have been in attendance of such event. This event people from all over the country from all walks of life to celebrate the Indigenous culture through, song, dance, oral story telling and other traditions. I would agree with Orange with the idea that it can take place anywhere as long as it is done with the right integrity.
