Quebec's Failing Grade ¶

Recently, Quebec's Auditor General stated that the provinces education department has done little to help Indigenous students. The report states that the Quebec government knew about a difference in gradutations between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students back in 2005 and has done nothing to try and bridge this divide. The report stated, “Nearly 20 years after noting a success gap among Indigenous students, the Education Department is still taking little action to promote their success,”. Quebec also lags behind the national gradutation rate for Indigenous students, having 10% more Indgienous peoples without a highschool diploma or certificate. One of the biggest issues in the report is language support. There is very little Indigenous language support to help Indigenous peoples in Quebec overcome the language barrier. This is yet again a moment in time where Indigenous people are not being properly represented. They are being pushed aside and could be seen as another attempt to alienate Indigenous identities in Canada. Furthermore, the report mentions that immigrant langauge supports are more then what Indigenous people receive. This demonstrates that there is a clear attempt to isolate Indigenous voices from Canada. What do you think should be done to address this issue and other issues like this? For me I believe there should be more funding to provide Indigenous peoples with education because of the value that education provides. Furthermore, proper education of Indigenous ways of knowing is a part of reconciliation, which is crucial in addressing the harm we have caused to Indigenous communities.
