Stereotypes ¶

While reading King, I was struck by his discussion on how Indigenous Peoples are often judged by their appearance. More specifically, if Indigenous People are not wearing traditional Indigenous symbols such as feathers and headdresses, they are not seen as true Indigenous Persons. This represents the stereotypical ideology that many Indigenous People face in society presently. The problem with this type of representation is that it reduces the Indigenous identity to mere visual markers, essentially limiting them to only representation, that is of their appearance. This type of judgment ignores the rich and diverse culture and history of the Indigenous People. When we continue to believe these types of stereotypes, we are continuing to marginalize Indigeous People as well as create continued misconceptions.
Kings ideas can be seen through many movies and tv shows that represent Indigenous People in this manner. To name a few, Dancing With Wolves and Pocohontas show unrealsitic appearence expectations as well as behaviours of Indigenous People. Thankfully today there has been movement to represent Indigenous People in a more authentic way.
