I want to share a sweet story from my practicum experience.
In practicum last year I was really fortunate to be placed at my local school where there are only about 75 students and I got to move between all the classes. In the grade 1-2 class I met a First Nation's boy who is very outgoing, after we introduced ourselves he complimented my hair, I told him I liked his braid too. He has a long braid down his back, and he told me "Thank you, I love my beautiful hair."
I've seen many stories on the news where boys are taunted for their long hair, or worse had it cut against their will. I think that a lesson on the spiritual signifigance of long hair to indigenous people is something that should be implemented into the curriculum so more male students can feel proud to wear their hair in braids.
