In the Indigenous culture the talking stick is seen as a powerful tool for communication. The individual who is holding the talking stick is the only one who can speak and the other individuals must listen respectfully. They are not allowed to speak or make comments until they have the talking stick. By incorporating this into an elementary classroom the students are able to learn about being respectful to others when they are talking. Not only does it teach the students proper manners while someone is speaking but also teaches them on Indigenous traditions and culture.
