Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid colonizing indigenous curriculum?
My main concerns are to:
1. Time management in sharing circles while still fostering freedom
2. Maintaining and teaching respect: If students share something personal, are there any tips to ensure their safety among their peers later?
3. How to appropriately correct negative attitudes towards indigenous perspectives: This one is anxiety inducing for me. I have had conversations with children aged 8-17 that have blantantly voiced negative/offensive/and disrespectful opinions towards indigenous people and curriculum. How do you encourage empathy when it seems to be absent? Do you continue to teach indigenous perspectives, or does that cause more harm? Lastly, how do you correct student responses without sending them into shame or singling them out?
