Is it okay to ask someone ‘how Indigenous’ they are? ¶

Is it rude for a non-indigenous person to ask if another person is indigenous and specifically how Indigenous?

I think the way you approach the topic matters. Asking how Indigenous they are could come across as insensitive perhaps. I think if you ask someone if you can ask about their heritage, or can they tell you about their ancestry, I think that is a considerate approach? Just my thoughts!

Hi Janay,
Personally, I do not feel like this question could be approached in a genuine manner. The first question that comes to mind is, "why does it matter?" It might feel insulting or degrading to an Indigenous person when asked how much Indigneous blood they have.
A webcomic created by Métis artist Rhael Mcgregor represents this concern well. It can be found at the following link: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/iqpodcast/are-you-full-native-1.5631938
