When is help too much?

When is help too much?

My experiences in grade school as a Cree-Métis student has not been memorable. When I am an educator, I am concerned that I might overcompensate for what I needed from my teachers when I was a student. I already see myself thinking about underlying factors that may impact my students in my practicum classrooms, specifically those who have shown behavioural issues. Is it possible to correct the issue too much that it does an injustice to my students?

Hi Teesha,

Thank you for sharing such a vulnerable thought.
What I do know about trauma responses is that people can become hyper-vigilant about certain things. Although it has negative aspects to it that require attention, I think that for the most part, no student will fall through the cracks with a teacher that is constantly aware and conscious of certain tell-tale behaviors. You will definitely not overlook a student. I think this sensitivity can be a real strength for you.
