Re: What is your favorite Indigenous resource?

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 21, 2021, 11:27 a.m.

The Book Nibi's Water Song written by Sunshine Tenasco is my favorite resource. Sunshine Tenasco is Anishinaabe from a small comminuty in Quebec that has been without clean drinking water since 2004. The book highlights the issue of the water crisis…

Re: Mandatory Indigenous Studies Classes

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 15, 2021, 6:05 p.m.

What about a mandatory component for each instructor to have to build into their class? I've noticed that most of our humanities classes do this, and I think it's amazing, but what about branching out into other programs that don't necessarily have …

Appropriation

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 13, 2021, 8:34 p.m.

Is it important to teach our students about appropriation? From what I've learned, to refrain from appropriating, credit the origin of cultural practices; however, is this something we should ensure we tell our students, so they don't inadvertantly …

Indigenous Picture Books that Focus on "Sameness"

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 13, 2021, 8:17 p.m.

Recently, in our ELA lecture on diversity, it was mentioned that resources that focus on "sameness" rather than differences are essential to add to our classroom libraries. Do any of you have any great examples of Indigenous books that show how we a…

The Indigenous Water Crisis

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 13, 2021, 8:08 p.m.

Did you know there are still more than 30 First Nations communities without clean drinking water? Don't let this fall off your radar! All Canadians should have access to clean drinking water.

Ideas to guide students to respect the sharing circle.

  By: joleen.binder on Oct. 9, 2021, 3:28 p.m.

My practicum teacher uses the sharing circle in her teacher practice, which I love, but because she has an open door policy for bathroom breaks, students are frerquently breaking the circle to go to the bathroom. Does anyone have any ideas?

I also enjoyed Fishing with Grandma. Another resource is The Polar Bear Son: An Inuit Tale by Lydia Dabcovich. Dabcovich is not an Indigenous author, but she does retell an Inuit folktale. It's a very cute story for little ones.

Re: Resources for div 2 students to learn about residential schools.

Check out Shi-Shi-Etko by Nicola I. Campbell. While it is a picture book that would be equally appropriate for Div I, the author uses some amazing artistry. It's a less obvious story about residential schools, so there's lots of room for inquiry and…
